RICARDO RIVAS

7

A graduate of the class of 2002, Ricardo was a two-year varsity player who came to La Jolla from Mexico City. Affectionately referred to as “Mexico” by his teammates, Ricardo was an outstanding running back on the junior varsity before moving up to the varsity his junior year. Slowed by injuries his junior season and seeing limited action, Ricardo carried the ball 20 times for 128 yards and scored one touchdown. He also had one reception for 18 yards. His best performance came in La Jolla’s 55-0 home coming victory against University City. In this game he carried the ball 8 times for 72 yards and one touchdown. Returning for his senior season Ricardo was prepared to assume the starting role at tailback. Slowed by early season injuries, he was at first unable to contribute as expected from the tailback position.  Once healthy, Ricardo was called upon to help the team defensively at the cornerback position. He responded by assuming a starting position in the secondary. For the year he scored 92 defensive points and was in on 33 tackles. His tough defensive play helped solidify a Viking defense that performed at an exceptional level throughout the second half of the season. Offensively, Ricardo finished the year with 126 yards on 49 carries and one touchdown. He also had 4 receptions for 25 yards. His teammates recognized his on the field contributions and leadership by voting him Team Captain for the 2001 season. He was also selected to the Honorable Mention All-Western League Team. Ricardo was an exceptional student and was recognized both his junior and senior years on the County All-Academic Team. He carried a 3.58 GPA. Pictures of Ricardo can be found in 2001 photo section.
